Botulinum Toxin or just simply: Botox

Botox (also traded as: BTXA, Dysport, Myobloc, Neurobloc, Xeomin) is a neurotoxic poison. It was introduced to the medical world in 1996 by a Canadian couple. During the last years the popularity of Botox has risen remarkably. Botox blocks facial muscles, expressions lines relax and thus we combat the signs of ageing. After treatment your skin remains smooth and without wrinkles. The (limited) use of Botox in Germany is authorised since 1993.

Effect

Fully shows after 48-72 hrs.; maximum after 1-2 weeks

Duration

4-6 months
There is no clue for a permanent degenerating atrophic change, despite the numerous long term injections.

Before the operation

Enlightenment on side effects (sagging eyelids or sagging eyebrows, bruises on the location of the injection, a sensation of pressure in your forehead, diplopia (double vision). Side effects are only temporarily, i.e. they last a few days, at the utmost weeks.

Contra-indications:

  • Pregnancy
  • Breastfeeding
  • Muscular ailment
  • Use of antibiotics

Technique

A superficial injection with a very thin needle is sufficient; two to ten injections are necessary.

  • Botox®: 2-5 u per injection spot
  • Dysport®: 10 u per spot

Maximum dosage

  • Botox®: 100 u
  • Disport®: 230 u
